About Alor

Alor, located east of Bali and Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, is a remote and mountainous island spanning 2,884.5 square miles. Once a Portuguese territory, it was handed over to the Dutch in 1854. Despite its rugged landscape, Alor is home to one of the world's most ethnically diverse populations.

With around 140,000 people spread across seven inhabited islands, Alor is divided into 50 tribes, each speaking distinct languages or dialects from seven different language groups. Some of these tribes practiced headhunting until the 1950s. While tribal disputes are rare today, Alor's traditional customs and warrior heritage remain an important part of its identity.

Whale Watching Tours

Peak Season: June – November

Alor's nutrient-rich waters attract an incredible variety of marine mammals. Year-round, we frequently encounter spinner and bottlenose dolphins, as well as pilot and melon-headed whales — sometimes forming super pods of up to 200 individuals.

During the annual migration from June to November, pygmy blue whales and sperm whales pass through the Pantar Strait. Blue whales can often be spotted right from our shores — even while relaxing by the pool.

Please let us know in advance so we can plan your whale watching trip accordingly.

Meet Mawar, Our Resident Dugong

Year-round dugong snorkeling

Mawar is our famous neighbourhood dugong, known for her friendly nature and curiosity about people and boats. She lives in a sheltered bay about a 30-minute drive from the resort.

Local fishermen who know the area will call for Mawar, and with a bit of luck, she'll approach the boat for a rare and unforgettable encounter. Nearby Niku Island is the perfect spot to relax, picnic, and snorkel afterwards.
